Dr. Yogesh Dwivedi is an outstanding and well-known young scientist with innovative ideas that have opened up important new areas of research. He already has a number of seminal findings to his credit published in peer-reviewed highly reputed journals. The major thrust of Dr. Dwivedi’s research is to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms associated with depression and suicidal behavior by comprehensively examining the roles of signal transduction mechanisms and their regulation by the HPA axis. His recently proposed hypothesis that abnormalities in cell survival pathways may lead to abnormalities in brain structure and thus to depressive and suicidal behavior has aroused widespread interest and attention. Utilizing postmortem brain, peripheral blood cell, and animal studies, he has identified abnormalities in signaling mechanisms, in particular, in various kinases, phosphatases, substrate molecules, and growth factors, involved in brain function and cell survival, which may serve as vulnerability factors in depression and suicide. His studies have clarified the dysfunctional signaling in these disorders and could lead to a fundamental breakthrough in understanding of the neurobiology of depression and suicide, which has a devastating impact on numerous lives, and may eventually help in designing better and more appropriate treatment strategies. Dr. Dwivedi has successfully integrated basic and clinical neuroscience by studying signaling systems and psychoactive drugs in human postmortem brain, in peripheral blood cells of suicidal/depressed patients, and using animal studies, and has developed an original animal model of depression and PTSD. He has won numerous awards for his research and is funded by the NIMH. His expertise is now sought for collaborative studies, as an invited speaker, as an author of book chapters and reviews, and as a reviewer of numerous journals and reviewer to NIMH Extramural Research Branch.
