Dr. Atkins has had a long-standing interest in the development of effective mental health services for children and families living in low-income communities. He is an active researcher in the areas of childhood ADHD and aggression, and a leading researcher on the development of school-based mental health services in urban high-poverty communities. He is a consultant to the Chicago Public Schools and the Illinois Department of Mental Health, and is a member of the Professional Advisory Board for CHADD. He was a member of the NIMH Services Research Review Committee from 1999 to 2001, and chair of the committee from 2001 to 2003.
