Biomedical Neuroscience Training Program
Introduction

neuropic.gif (44113 bytes)
The 1990's were delared "Decade of the Brain" and these past few years have seen an explosion of information concerning all aspects of neuroscience.

Recent advances in Neuroscience range from the revealing of minute detail of proteins which shape synaptic messages to the window on the mind which has been allowed by the development of brain imaging. The next decade promises an even more rapid addition to our knowledge base.

To best prepare for the future of academic neuroscience, the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois, Chicago, College of Medicine has formed a program leading to the PhD or MD/PhD degree. Neuroscientists from within Psychiatry as well as others on the campus have joined together to initiate the program described here. It is also expected that some talented Psychiatry residents will gain the opportunity to do research with these faculty.

As a new program, we intended for our approach to the study of neurobiology to be flexible and plastic as the nervous system itself. No traditions are in place which might prevent the creativity of young scholars from interfering with innovation in their program of study. We invite you to learn more about this unique and exciting opportunity for advanced studies.
