Applications

The materials listed below are required for admission to the Biomedical Neuroscience Training Program. International applicants should send in all materials by March 15. The deadline for U.S. applicants is April 1 (for September enrollment). All materials should be sent to:

1) Admission Application.

This is the Graduate College Application. If you are not able to retrieve the application, please contact Yvone Curtis (312-355-0583, neuro@psych.uic.edu) and she will send you one. For Question 20 on the Graduate College Application, the Program is Physiology and Biophysics and the curriculum code is 7538. The Specialization is Biomedical Neuroscience Training Program. For Degree Sought, check "Ph.D." The Program (Department) may be changed later by the Education Committee after reviewing the application and consulting with the applicant.

  1. Application for Graduate Appointment.

This form needs to be filled out as well. The Graduate Appointment being applied for is the Assistantship. This form can be downloaded from http://www.uic.edu/depts/grad/gcforms.html.

3) Official transcripts from all colleges and universities.

4) Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores must be sent directly from the testing service. The Institution code is R1851. The Department Code we are using is 0217 (Physiology).

5) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants whose native language is not English. Scores should be sent directly from the testing service. The Institution code is R1851 and the Department Code is 49 (Physiology) for this test.

6) Three letters of recommendation.

7) An essay of 1,000 words or less (total). The essay should answer the following questions:

a) What has motivated you to seek further study in neuroscience?

b) Which area of neuroscience interests you most?

c) What do you envision your career situation to be 20 years from now?

8) The Declaration and Certification of Finances form needs to be filled out by international applicants. This can be downloaded from: http://www.uic.edu/depts/grad/gcforms.html.

9) Along with the application materials listed above, please include a check for the application fee (domestic students: $40.00; foreign students: $50.00) made payable to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The application materials will be reviewed by the Biomedical Neuroscience Training Program’s Education Committee. For each application, the Education Committee will decide whether to keep Physiology and Biophysics as department or assign one of the other Graduate College basic science departments. After the department chosen reviews the application and accepts it, it is sent to the UIC Office of Admissions and Records.

The department assigned to the application will be the home department for the applicant and will grant the Ph.D. degree, with a specialization in Biomedical Neuroscience granted by the Biomedical Neuroscience Training Program.
