Education and Training Programs

A key strength of the Department’s training programs is the diversity of our faculty members, trainees and the myriad clinical experiences to which trainees are exposed. Our faculty members engage in cutting-edge research as well as patient care. Our residency and undergraduate training programs integrate basic science and clinical research with patient care in a process informed by the latest data on diagnosis and treatment efficacy. We take seriously the mission of providing a solid foundation of education and training on which the next generation can build careers.

Psychiatry Residency and Training
Our residents come from diverse ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds encompassing all five continents and representing more than ten nationalities. Residents are trained and supervised by experts from numerous subspecialties within psychiatry. Clinical rotations range from the inpatient research ward to community outreach programs. Residents rotate through university, state, private and VA hospitals and can gain experience in various subspecialties or public-sector psychiatry.

Child Psychiatry Residency
This program, recently relocated to renovated space in the Clinical Sciences Building at Wood and Polk Streets, has been enhanced with several new faculty recruits and the development of several new specialty clinics. These clinics include a Pediatric Anxiety Disorders Clinic and a Pediatric Mood Disorders Clinic. Other new services within the Child Psychiatry Residency Program include Forensic Services for children and adolescents, and a Consultation/Liaison Team.

Child and Adult Psychology Internships
A newly restructured Psychology Internship Program emphasizing clinical research was launched in fall 2003. With guidance from faculty, interns craft their own curriculum with concentrations of their choice, drawing upon a wide and diverse faculty whose specialties align with the intern’s interests and career trajectory. The program features dedicated time throughout the year for engaging in research with faculty, as well as a yearlong clinical placement and other programmatic clinical/research opportunities.

Undergraduate Medical Education
Our undergraduate medical education programs are extensive and span the four years of medical education. Training includes Human Development, Brain and Behavior, Psychopathology, and Psychopharmacology, as well as many electives from which fourth-year medical students can choose.

Clinical Child and Family Social Work Internship
Each year, four to six students are placed in IJR’s social work training internship. This program offers exceptional training in child and family mental health with an emphasis on family systems. Interns work mostly in the outpatient clinic with opportunities in specialty clinics such as anxiety or mood disorders, or they may participate in clinical research.
