David Simpson, PhD, LCSW

Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Social Work

Dr. Simpson has extensive experience treating youth and adults with anxiety disorders using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in the Pediatric Stress and Anxiety Disorders Clinic and the Adult Anxiety Disorders Program at UIC.  His research interests include determining protective and risk factors in the development of anxiety disorders in youth, particularly, coping strategies, parenting practices, and family stress.  Dr. Simpson also is the Program Evaluator for the Urban Youth Trauma Center, a multi-year, SAMHSA funded project, designed to address community violence and training individuals to work with and treat youth with trauma exposure and/or traumatic stress.  Dr. Simpson is an active member of the Social Work Training Program in IJR, supervising multiple interns during their second year, concentration placement.  He is also the lead therapist in an NIH funded research study addressing brain markers in youth with anxiety disorders who receive either Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or medications.


Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to treat anxiety disorders across the life-span; psychosocial research on youth with anxiety disorders; and teaching.
