Foster Parents FAQ's - Questions

Questions about what to do before medications are started.

  1. Can I give consent to begin psychotropic medications?
  2. What is the foster parent’s role in consenting for medication?
  3. Can I refuse to give a DCFS ward in my care psychotropic medication if I am not in agreement with it?

Questions about what to do after medications are started.

  1. Should I inform the caseworker of any prescription changes?
  2. What should I do if my foster child experiences side effects?
  3. It is my understanding that my foster child’s medications are to be reviewed every 6 months for their continued use, can I give input?
  4. If I forget to give a dosage of medication, can I double the next dose? 
  5. What should I do if my foster child refuses to take prescribed medications?
  6. Where should I store the medications since they are controlled substances?

Questions About Psychotropic Medications

  1. Where can I obtain information regarding the usage, dosage and potential side effects of my child’s medications? 
  2. Do these medications cause abuse or dependence?
  3. Is it a normal practice for children to be on more than one psychotropic medication?
  4. Are these medications to be used on a long-term basis? 
  5. I have heard the term; “build up in his /her system & therapeutic level” what exactly dose that mean?
