Psychiatric Services
The Women's Mental Health Program at the University of Illinois at
Chicago is designed to meet the unique needs of women with psychiatric
disorders and life problems. Examples include:

The Women's Mental
Health Program is nationally recognized as a model clinical and teaching
program. It has won two prestigious national awards: The American
Psychiatric Association's Gold Achievement Award for innovative mental
health service delivery, and the American College of Psychiatrists'
Award for Creativity in Psychiatric Education. Clinicians in the program
include psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers with expertise
in the unique mental health needs of women.
The Women's Mental
Health Program is part of the
University of Illinois at Chicago Center of Excellence in Women's
Health. This is a national center of concentrated expertise in
women's health, incorporating clinical, teaching and research programs
in internal medicine, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology,
and psychiatry.

The Women's Clinic:
The
Women's Clinic is an outpatient clinic for women that offers comprehensive
mental health services, including diagnostic evaluation, medication
management, individual psychotherapy, couples therapy and family therapy.
The Women's Consultation Service:
The
Women's Consultation Service offers diagnostic evaluations and consultations
for women who are being treated by other health professionals, but
who need the specialized expertise available at the Women's Mental
Health Program. Women often obtain consultation for issues such as:

Planning
a pregnancy and wanting to know about safety of psychiatric medications
while trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and while breast feeding

How
to prevent postpartum depression

Adjusting
treatment for symptoms that worsen premenstrually
-
Adjusting
treatment during the transition to menopause

Understanding
the interactions between hormonal changes and psychiatric symptoms
The Eating Disorders Clinic:
The
Eating Disorders Clinic offers comprehensive and integrated services
for women with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia
nervosa, and binge eating disorder (compulsive overeating). The clinic's
services include diagnostic evaluations, individual therapy, group
therapy, family therapy, and medication management.
The Women's Inpatient Treatment Service:
The
Women's Inpatient Treatment Service is a hospital-based team of experts
in women's mental health. The team offers diagnostic evaluation, crisis
intervention, medication adjustment, family intervention and group
therapy for women who have serious symptoms requiring hospital-level
care.
