Inpatient Services:
Our 24 bed inpatient unit serves the acute, short-term needs of adult patient during periods of crisis. We specialize in the treatment of pregnant women with psychiatric disorders and patients suffering from the psychiatric complications of brain disease or injury. we also treat general psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia as well as addictive such as alcohol, cocaine, heroin abuse or dependency.

Intensive Outpatient Services:
Our Intensive Outpatient programs are more intensive than regular outpatient services. The components of the program include evaluation, individual and group therapy, case management services, and an aftercare program. Again, the goal of the program is to help patients control symptoms and function in the home and work environments.

Outpatient Services for All Ages:
Many services are available to patient and families in the outpatient setting.

Psychotherapy:
Individual, couple, and family psychotherapy are available. We offer brief or long-term services as well as cognitive behavioral therapy.

Group Therapy:
Group therapy provides emotional support, education, and a feeling of not being so "different". We offer therapeutic groups that focus on distinct clinical issues.

Our groups help with improving communication skills, managing anger and stress, setting goals, developing functional life skills for increased independence, solving problems and managing symptoms. In addition, the groups provide education and answer patients' questions about the use of medications to manage mental illness. As an alternative or adjunct to individual therapy conserves resources.

Psychopharmacological Treatment:
UIC psychiatrists are experts in pharmacological treatment of psychiatric disorders. We offer specialized medication clinics as well as psychopharmacologic treatment with psychotherapy.

Consultation Services:
We provide consultation services to physicians and other health care providers in the community as well as to patients and their families. Consultation services include second opinions on psychiatric diagnosis, assessment of unusual manifestations of a disorder, and guidance regarding treatment options (including psychotropic medication). We have expertise in the interrelationship between medical and psychiatric disorders.

Psychological and Neuropsychological Testing:
Testing can determine a patient's intellectual quotient, assist in the diagnostic evaluation, and identify specific cognitive defects.

Electroconvulsive Therapy:
This is a safe and effective treatment for major depression and related disorders. We initiate electroconvulsive therapy on an inpatient setting, then may continue treatment on an outpatient basis.

Case Management:
Many patients face nonmedical obstacles that interfere with their treatment or long-term progress. These obstacles include difficulties with: transportation, child care, housing, economics, and family concerns. Our clinical social workers help patients cope with these issues, in order to maximize the effectiveness of their treatment. Services are provided at the UIC Medical Center as well as the patient's home environment.

Case Management services include:

  • Linkage to services within the hospital and clinics
  • Linkage to social services agencies and community resources
  • Outreach services to improve daily functioning
  • Home visits
  • Escort to appointments
  • Crisis intervention services
