Clinical
HALP Program Fact Sheet

History and Mission Statement
The HALP Clinic was started in 1987 as a multidisciplinary clinic specializing in comprehensive evaluations for children, adolescents and adults with attentional deficits and/or academic underachievement and associated demoralization and behavioral issues.

The HALP Clinic is located in the Colbeth Child and Adolescent Clinic at the Institute for Juvenile Research. The office is located at 1747 Roosevelt Road, University of Illinois-Chicago, IL 60608. There is also a north suburban satellite clinic at 900 Skokie Blvd, Suite 113, Northbrook, Illinois 60062.

The Adult ADHD Clinic is located at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at 912 South Wood Street, Chicago, IL 60612. This clinic is a multidisciplinary team consisting of clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychologists, working together to provide innovative treatment services for adult ADHD. The adult ADHD clinic offers a wide array of services, including diagnostic evaluations, medication consultations, community treatment referrals, and in depth cognitive and psychological assessments. Taken together, these services offer a comprehensive approach to the evaluation and treatment of ADHD and other commonly co-occurring psychological problems, learning disorders, and cognitive concerns.

HALP Clinic Staff
Dr. Mark Stein, Clinical Psychologist, directs the HALP multidisciplinary programs. Additionally, Dr. Elizabeth Charney, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, and Dr. Lisa Stanford, a Pediatric Neuropsychologist are part of the multidisciplinary HALP team for children and adolescents.

Dr. Stein is joined by Dr. Radmila Manev, Dr. Nicole White, and Dr. Lisa Pellegrini, all Adult Psychiatrists, and Neuropsychologist, Dr. Neil Pliskin, in the Adult ADHD Clinic.

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois-Chicago is a teaching facility where Psychology, Psychiatry, Neurology, and Pediatric trainees have the opportunity to observe and participate in evaluations for both the HALP and Adult ADHD clinics.

Finally, we would like to welcome Dr. Francesca Skowronski to our staff. She will be specializing in evaluations and behavioral and family therapy.

Evaluation/Feedback and Treatment Summaries
HALP evaluations normally include diagnostic interviews, psychological testing (if indicated), and sometimes a physical and neurological/developmental exam. The evaluation typically takes approximately 4-6 hours to complete and charges range from $1100-1600. Consultation services are also available. In addition to determining if ADHD is present, the evaluation identifies conditions that mimic or exacerbate ADHD, comorbid conditions, and cognitive and interpersonal strengths. A written report with a treatment plan is subsequently forwarded to the patient / parents and referring physician within one month of the evaluation appointment.

Treatment recommendations are reviewed at a feedback session, usually the week following the initial evaluation. Following the evaluation, patients are either referred back to their primary care physician / pediatrician for follow-up care, referred to another health care or mental health provider, or offered treatment through the HALP program.

Clinical Research
Currently, we are conducting several studies of genetic factors and ADHD treatments in children, adolescents, and adults.

The Sleep and Tolerability (SAT) Study, sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals, evaluates how children and adolescents (ages 10-17) respond to treatment with three different doses of stimulants medications used to treat ADHD (Adderall XR, Focalin XR). It analyzes differences in sleep, side effects, and the characteristics of individuals who respond to either of the medications. There are two randomized, blinded treatment periods for this study, one with Focalin for three weeks and one with Adderall for three weeks, with a randomized placebo week within each period.
