M1 : Brain and Behavior

17 sessions for 180-200 students.

Course Director: Michael Schrift, MD

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the definition of neuropsychiatry, the basics of the exam, and how it complements/integrates neurology and psychiatry as well as its role in medicine.
  • Learn about cognition (such as memory, language, and executive functions), and aspects of their neurochemical and neuroanatomical substrates, as well as the role of neuropharmacology in cognition.
  • Learn about the basic tools of “lab” evaluation in clinical neuroscience, such as MRI, fMRI, and neuropsychological testing.
  • Explore certain disorders in more detail, both clinical aspects and current research, to provide examples that will integrate previous lectures as much as possible, such as seizure disorders,  addiction, traumatic brain injury, and schizophrenia.

 

 

M1 Human Development Course

Course Director: Lisa Razzano, Ph.D

  • All M1 students are required to take and pass course
  • In 2007-08, course expanded from 12 to 17 lectures to increase focus on neuroscience, developmental mental health, and illnesses of childhood
  • Greater emphasis on cross-walking material with Brain & Behavior course
  • Course includes research and evidence-based practice related to neurological development, mental disorders of childhood through geriatrics, and other topics related to psychiatry
