The Department of Psychiatry is one of the leading research departments in the country and annually ranks in the top 20 in NIH/federally-funded research grants. To facilitate the development of psychiatrists who excel as clinicians and scientists, the Department has created a specialized Adult and Child Psychiatry Neuroscience Research Track (RT). Through formal instruction, mentorship, and the completion of a research project, RT residents have a structured, supportive pathway towards scientific and professional development in psychiatric neuroscience.
The training involves 5 years of integrated and specialized clinical and research training with protected research time in years 3-5 of the residency, designed to progressively increase (e.g., 30-40 percent in the PGY 3 year, 70 percent in the PGY 4 year and 80-90 percent in PGY 5 year). In addition, post-residency fellowship training may be recommended, if appropriate. The goal of the RT is to ideally position the RT graduate to be competitive for a career development grant (‘K Award’) that will facilitate the transition into a tenure-track faculty position.
Opportunities and benefits afforded to RT residents include:
- Supportive, structured process and plan to link the RT resident with appropriate research mentor(s)
- Monthly workshop (‘Colloquium for Junior Scholars) dedicated to RT residents, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty focused on scientific and career development topics
- Formal protected research time away from clinical training obligations
- Pilot funding for lab supplies, other research project costs, and travel expenses to attend scientific conferences
- Assistance and support for applications for Travel Awards to scientific conferences, NIH Loan Repayment Program, and other awards to enhance extramural training (e.g, NIMH ‘Brain Camp’)
- NIH NIMH-supported T32 Postdoctoral Training Program in the Neuroscience of Mental Health
- Masters of Science degree in Neuroscience or Masters in Public Health (MPH) during the training period when appropriate
- Constructive internal review of applications for career development and pilot grants
- Salary augmentation (e.g., stipend) in years 3-5 of the RT residency
