Through our continuing education programs, we support the mission of the Department of Psychiatry and the University of Illinois by providing lectures, conferences, and workshops focused on the latest in prevention and evidence-based, best practice treatments of psychiatric and mental health disorders. By inviting leaders in the field of mental health, psychiatry, and neuroscience; we will spread knowledge of recent neuroscience breakthroughs and illuminate areas that show great potential with further research. In opening our education programs to all interested clinicians and professionals both within and outside of the University, we hope to be a partner for public agencies and clinical individuals seeking educational and research support.
The Department of Psychiatry’s professional library was founded in 1959 as part of the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute. It was named the Jack Weinberg Library in 1981 in honor of Jack Weinberg, former Director of the Institute and past-President of the American Psychiatric Association.
The Jack Weinberg Library contains an extensive collection of psychiatric and mental health resources in print journals, books, and educational videotapes for staff, students, and patients. The library supports the research, clinical, and educational needs of the staff, students and researchers in their effort to provide the optimum in patient care. A librarian is available to assist in answering reference questions, aid in computer literature searches, and locating and retrieving specialized materials and information.

This integrative 12 week online continuing edu
cation curriculum is aimed at providing a serious dialogue between religious and secular psychological/psychiatric thought around the contrasts between Classical Greek and Biblical world views. The topics developed by Dr. Kalman J. Kaplan, director, for this program includes an overview of God, nature and creation, self and other, obedience and disobedience, man and woman, freedom, life and suicide, and a tragic versus hopeful outlook on life.
The Program of Religion/Spirituality and Mental Health addresses the disconnect between biblical religious/spiritual counselors and secular psychotherapists. Upon completion of the program participants should be able to:
- Describe spiritual therapeutic techniques related to each of the topics listed above.
- Discuss classical Greek biases in mental health related to each of the topics listed above.
- List biblical narratives in each of the topics listed above.
- Describe the basis and application of a biblical therapy related to each of the topics listed above.
- Describe how knowledge of Greek and biblical narratives can improve mental health in psychiatry patients.

Registration is open to a broad audience, including:
- Secular therapists and health care professionals such as physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and social workers.
- Clergy and pastoral counselors including rabbis, priests, ministers and chaplains

The online RSMH course is offered three times each year. The start date for the coming session is the week of Monday, January 17, 2011.
