UIC International Center on Responses to
Catastrophes
Request for Applications for Fellows
Due September 1, 2004
The UIC International Center on Responses to
Catastrophes welcomes applications for fellows from students and
trainees at the graduate and postdoctoral level with an interest
in catastrophes. Applicants may come from UIC or other Chicago
area institutions of higher learning and from any discipline.
ICORC’s primary mission is to promote multidisciplinary
research and scholarship that contributes to improved helping
efforts for those affected by catastrophes. The Center is highly
multidisciplinary in approach with university faculty from
collaborating departments and colleges, representing mental
health and health services, humanities and social sciences.
Vital to the Center's work is building national and
international collaborations with academic, advocacy and
services organizations.
ICORC activities have three core realms of focus:
- Documentary: To document the human experiencing of
catastrophes through literary and multi-media approaches;
- Ethnographic: To analyze the cultural and social
dimensions of catastrophes through ethnographic inquiries;
- Intervention: To conduct innovative, family focused and
community based services research on the mental health
consequences of catastrophes.
ICORC is seeking fellows who would like to work on some of
the key projects of the center:
- HIV/AIDS and substance abuse in post conflict societies
- Teen refugees, their families, and schools
- Religion and psychiatric responses to terror
- Catastrophe and the arts
- Humanitarian interventions in post-conflict countries
Applicants may also propose their own project that they
believe will support and broaden the current research of the
center.
Fellows are appointed for one to two years. Fellows receive
mentorship from center faculty and modest funds to support their
research activities.
Interested applicants should send a 1 to 2 page proposal by
September 1, 2004 to the ICORC office:
