Lisa Sanchez-Johnsen Ph.D.

Visiting Associate Professor

Lisa Sánchez-Johnsen, Ph.D. is a Visiting Associate Professor and Director of the Multicultural and Latino Health Research Program in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received her Doctorate and Masters degrees from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and her Bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii-Manoa. She previously held positions as an Assistant Professor at The University of Chicago and the University of Hawaii-Manoa. Dr. Sánchez has a 17-year history of conducting culture-based health research and clinical work with Latinos and other minorities. She recently completed an NCI-funded K01 award research study, the aim of which was to develop a culture-based diet, exercise, and body image with overweight Latinas. Her current research is funded by two NCI-R21 grants to examine culture and obesity in Mexican and Puerto Rican women and men. She was previously a Health Disparities Research Scholar with the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities. She is active in national Latino (Past Board Member of the National Latino Psychological Association) and health organizations (founder/past chair of the Ethnic Minority Health Interest Group, Society of Behavioral Medicine). In 2008, she received the "Distinguished Professional Early Career Award" from the National Latino Psychological Association for her work in Latino disparities. She currently teaches the "Cultural Competency and Mental Health Disparities Course" to interns and other trainees and offers a rotation in multicultural and health disparities research.
